Welcome to the Simple Elegance of Siddipet!
Namaste, my friend! Pull up a seat, enjoy a warm cup of chai, and let’s talk about a handloom tradition that brings a smile to everyone who sees it—the delightful Siddipet Gollabhamma Saree.
If you love sarees that are simple, lightweight, breathable, and rooted in authentic village storytelling, the Gollabhamma saree holds a very special place. What makes this drape so enchanting isn't gold zari or heavy ornamentation, but a charming little figure woven right into the border and pallu: a rural milkmaid holding a milk container on her head! It’s an art form that turns everyday rural life into wearable poetry.

How It All Began (The Roots)
Our story takes us to Siddipet district in Telangana, and specifically to the historic weaving villages of Kondapaka and Dubbaka. For generations, master weaver families in these villages have been renowned for their fine handloom craftsmanship.
The name "Gollabhamma" comes directly from our rural folk culture. The weavers drew inspiration from the vibrant attire and daily lives of the women belonging to the pastoral Golla community—a traditional cattle-rearing community known for selling fresh milk and curd across the villages. The weavers decided to capture the grace of these hardworking shepherd women on their looms, giving birth to a unique textile identity that belongs purely to Telangana.

The Story of the 'Gollabhamma' Motif
So how does this adorable motif get onto the saree?
Instead of printing or embroidering the design afterwards, our Siddipet weavers use a special inlaid weave / extra-weft technique directly on the handloom.
  1. The weaver prepares the body using soft, pure cotton threads.
  2. As the loom moves, contrasting colored yarns are manually passed through specified sections to form the figurine.
  3. Thread by thread, the silhouette emerges: a proud milkmaid (Gollabhamma) carrying a milk pot (ghatam) on her head!
While the milkmaid is by far the most famous motif, weavers in Siddipet also weave other traditional motifs inspired by Telangana's celebrations, such as Kolatam stick-dancers and the Bathukamma floral festival stacks. Beyond sarees, artisans also weave this motif onto handwoven towels, bed sheets, and pillow covers!

Fabric, Comfort, and Simplicity
If you’ve ever worn a Siddipet Gollabhamma saree, you know that comfort is its middle name!
Woven with pure cotton, these sarees are specifically crafted for our warm climate. While a brand-new saree might feel slightly crisp or structured straight off the loom, it softens beautifully over time, becoming lighter, more breathable, and wonderfully durable after every wash. The subtle body paired with bold, contrasting motif borders gives it an understated elegance that never goes out of style.

Our Heritage & Global Recognition
This humble village weave has earned grand honors across the world:
  • The GI Tag (2011–2012): To protect the traditional weavers of Kondapaka and Dubbaka from fake powerloom copies, the Siddipet Gollabhamma Saree was officially granted the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.
  • UNESCO Listing: UNESCO showcased the global importance of this craft by featuring the Gollabhamma saree in its prestigious report, "Handmade for the 21st Century: Safeguarding Traditional Indian Textile".

Styling & Keeping It Alive Today
The beauty of a Gollabhamma saree is its pure versatility. It is lightweight enough to wear comfortably all day at the office or school, yet dignified enough for festive gatherings, cultural events, and family pujas. Many young women today pair these cotton sarees with silver jewelry or casual terracotta ornaments for a chic, eco-friendly look.
When we buy an authentic Siddipet Gollabhamma saree, we are directly supporting the weaver households of Kondapaka and Dubbaka. We help ensure that a young weaver can carry forward an art form that UNESCO itself celebrates!
