Engineering Materials → Engineering Materials → Ferrous Materials → Testing of Materials → Iron and Its Production | Author: admin | Mar 10, 2026
Pig iron is the primary product obtained from the blast furnace.
It is the basic raw material used for producing cast iron and steel.
Definition
Pig Iron
Pig iron is the crude iron obtained directly from the blast furnace containing high carbon and impurities.
Composition of Pig Iron
Typical composition:
| Element | Percentage |
|---|---|
| Iron | 90–94% |
| Carbon | 3–4.5% |
| Silicon | 1–3% |
| Manganese | 0.5–1% |
| Phosphorus | Small amount |
| Sulfur | Small amount |
Characteristics of Pig Iron
Pig iron has the following properties:
-
Hard and brittle
-
High carbon content
-
Low ductility
-
Cannot be used directly for engineering applications
Types of Pig Iron
Pig iron is classified into:
1. Grey Pig Iron
-
Contains higher silicon
-
Grey fracture surface
2. White Pig Iron
-
Low silicon content
-

-
Cast iron
-
Steel
-
Wrought iron
-
Foundry products
