Ferrous materials are iron-based materials that contain iron as the main constituent.

They are the most widely used engineering materials because of their:

  • High strength

  • Good machinability

  • Availability

  • Low cost

Examples include cast iron, steel, pig iron, and wrought iron.

Iron is one of the most important metals used in engineering industries.
It is mainly produced from iron ores in a blast furnace through a chemical reduction process.

Unit 13.1: Iron Ores

Iron does not occur in pure metallic form in nature.
It is mainly found in the form of ores, which are compounds of iron mixed with other elements like oxygen, sulfur, and carbonates.

Definition

Iron Ore

An iron ore is a natural mineral deposit from which iron can be economically extracted.

Common Types of Iron Ores

The most important iron ores used for iron production are:

Iron OreChemical FormulaIron Content
HematiteFeβ‚‚O₃~70%
MagnetiteFe₃Oβ‚„~72%
Limonite2Feβ‚‚O₃·3Hβ‚‚O~60%
SideriteFeCO₃~48%

1. Hematite

  • Most widely used iron ore

  • Reddish-brown in color

  • High iron content

  • Easy to reduce in blast furnace

2. Magnetite

  • Magnetic in nature

  • Highest iron content

  • Black in color

  • Difficult to reduce compared to hematite

3. Limonite

  • Hydrated iron oxide

  • Yellowish-brown color

  • Lower iron content

4. Siderite

  • Iron carbonate ore

  • Lowest iron content among major ores

  • Requires roasting before reduction

Requirements of a Good Iron Ore

A good iron ore should have:

  • High iron content

  • Low impurities

  • Easy reduction properties

  • Good mechanical strength

Common Impurities in Iron Ore

Iron ores usually contain impurities called gangue materials such as:

  • Silica (SiOβ‚‚)

  • Alumina (Alβ‚‚O₃)

  • Phosphorus

  • Sulfur

These impurities are removed during the blast furnace process.

Exam-Focused Points

Important facts for JE/AE exams:

  • Magnetite has the highest iron content

  • Hematite is the most commonly used ore
