Mechanical tests are performed to determine the mechanical properties of materials by applying different types of loads such as tension, compression, impact, or repeated stress.

These tests help engineers understand how materials behave under working conditions.


Classification of Mechanical Tests

Mechanical tests are mainly classified into two types:

1. Destructive Tests

2. Non-Destructive Tests


1. Destructive Tests

Destructive tests are tests in which the material fails or breaks during testing.

The specimen cannot be reused after the test.

These tests are used to determine the exact strength and failure characteristics of materials.

Common Destructive Tests

Tensile Test

  • Measures tensile strength, yield strength, and ductility.

  • Specimen is pulled until it breaks.

Compression Test

  • Material is compressed to determine compressive strength.

Impact Test

Fatigue Test

2. Non-Destructive Tests (NDT)

Non-destructive tests are tests in which the material is not damaged or destroyed.

The specimen can still be used after testing.

These tests are widely used in industries for quality inspection and defect detection.

Common Non-Destructive Tests

Ultrasonic Testing

  • Uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal defects.

Radiography Testing

  • Uses X-rays or gamma rays to detect internal cracks.

Magnetic Particle Testing

  • Used for detecting surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials.

Dye Penetrant Testing

  • Used to detect surface defects.

Hardness Test

Determines resistance to indentation or scratching.
