Castability is the ability of a molten metal to flow easily into a mould and completely fill the mould cavity to produce a sound casting without defects.

In simple words, it is the capacity of a metal to be successfully cast into a desired shape.


Explanation

In the casting process, metal is first melted and then poured into a mould cavity.
After cooling, the metal solidifies and takes the shape of the mould.

A metal with good castability:

  • Flows easily in molten state

  • Fills thin sections of the mould

  • Produces defect-free castings

A metal with poor castability may cause:

  • Incomplete filling

  • Blow holes

  • Shrinkage defects

  • Surface roughness


Characteristics of Good Castability

A metal with good castability has:

  • High fluidity in molten state

  • Proper solidification behaviour

  • Ability to reproduce fine details of mould


Factors Affecting Castability

1. Fluidity of Molten Metal

Fluidity is the ability of molten metal to flow in the mould.

Higher fluidity → better castability.

  • Cast iron has very good fluidity.


2. Pouring Temperature

Higher pouring temperature improves fluidity and mould filling.

However, too high temperature may cause:

  • Gas absorption

  • Oxidation

  • Metal defects


3. Mould Material

Mould material affects heat transfer and solidification.

Examples:

  • Sand moulds

  • Metal moulds

Sand moulds allow better gas escape.


4. Alloy Composition

Alloying elements affect melting behaviour and fluidity.

Example:

  • Silicon improves castability in cast iron.


5. Solidification Range

Metals that solidify over a wide temperature range may produce defects like shrinkage cavities.

Metals with short solidification range generally have better castability.
