Definition: The Grid System
Before we ask What India's coordinates are, we must ask Why do we need coordinates?
Imagine you need to pinpoint an exact address on a blank globe. To do this, geographers use an imaginary grid system of intersecting lines to determine a location. Coordinates and Extent refer to the absolute latitudinal and longitudinal boundaries within which a country is located, defining its exact global address and physical dimensions.
- Latitudes: Horizontal lines running East to West. They determine the climate of a place (how close it is to the Equator) [1, 2].
- Longitudes: Vertical lines running North to South. They determine the time of a place [3].
Basic Concept: Location & Size
- Global Position: India is located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere (above the Equator) and the Eastern Hemisphere [2, 4].
- Total Area: India covers 32,87,263 sq. km (approx. 3.28 million sq. km) [5-7].
- Global Share: This accounts for 2.4% of the world's total geographical area [5-7].
- World Rank: India is the 7th largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada, USA, China, Brazil, and Australia) [5-7].
Characteristics: India's Exact Extent
- Latitudinal Extent: 8Β°4' N to 37Β°6' N [2, 8, 9].
- Longitudinal Extent: 68Β°7' E to 97Β°25' E [1, 2, 9].
(Note: If you subtract these numbers, both the latitudinal and longitudinal extents are roughly 30Β°) [1, 6].
Dimensions & Distribution in India: N-S vs E-W
Even though both the latitudinal and longitudinal extents are roughly 30Β°, the actual physical distance on the ground differs:
- North to South Distance: 3,214 km [8, 10].
- East to West Distance: 2,933 km [8, 10].
Why the difference? The distance between two longitudes is maximum at the Equator and decreases as we move toward the poles, whereas the distance between two latitudes remains constant everywhere. Therefore, the East-West extent in kilometers is lesser than the North-South extent [6, 8].
βββ Two Most Important Lines Passing Through India
1. The Tropic of Cancer (23Β°30' N)
- Concept: It is an imaginary latitude that divides India into two almost equal halves: the Tropical Zone in the south and the Sub-tropical/Temperate Zone in the north [2, 11, 12].
- Distribution: It passes through 8 Indian States [11].
- West to East sequence: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, and Mizoram [11, 13].
2. Indian Standard Time Meridian (IST - 82Β°30' E)
- Concept: Because India has a vast longitudinal extent of almost 30Β°, there is a natural time gap of about 2 hours between Gujarat in the west and Arunachal Pradesh in the east [12, 14]. The Earth rotates 360Β° in 24 hours (1Β° = 4 minutes). A 30Β° spread Γ 4 mins = 120 mins = 2 hours [12, 15].
- Characteristics: To avoid confusion, 82Β°30' E is taken as the Standard Meridian [14, 16]. Watches across India show the same time based on this line. It is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) [16].
- Distribution: It passes near Mirzapur (Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh) [14, 16].
Classification: Extreme Points of India ββ
| Direction | Extreme Point | Location / State | Coordinate |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | Indira Col | Ladakh UT (Karakoram Range) | 37Β°6' N [10, 17] |
| South (Mainland) | Kanyakumari / Cape Comorin | Tamil Nadu | 8Β°4' N [10, 18] |
| South (Indian Union) | Indira Point (Pygmalion Point) | Great Nicobar Island | 6Β°45' N [2, 10] |
| East | Kibithu | Arunachal Pradesh | 97Β°25' E [9, 19] |
| West | Guhar Moti | Rann of Kutch, Gujarat | 68Β°7' E [19] |
(Note: Indira Point got submerged under seawater during the 2004 Tsunami) [2, 20].

Previous TGPSC/UPSC Question Patterns π
- βββ Assertion-Reason: Assertion: India's East-West distance is smaller than the North-South distance. Reason: The distance between longitudes decreases as we move towards the poles. (Answer: Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation) [6, 8].
- ββ Odd-One-Out / Factual: Identifying states sharing the Tropic of Cancer. Example: "Which state does the Tropic of Cancer NOT pass through?" (Options: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Tripura. Answer: Odisha) [11, 13].
- β Conceptual: Why does the Sun rise two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh than in Gujarat, but watches show the same time? (Because the whole country follows a single Standard Meridian) [12, 14].
Common Mistakes β
- Mistake: Blindly choosing Kanyakumari as the southernmost point.
- Correction: Always read the question carefully. If the examiner asks for the southernmost point of the Mainland, the answer is Kanyakumari (8Β°4' N) [10, 18]. If they ask for the entire Indian Union/Territory, it is Indira Point (6Β°45' N) [2, 10].
MCQs for Practice π
Easy:
1. What is the latitudinal extent of the Indian mainland?
a) 8Β°4' N to 37Β°6' N
b) 6Β°45' N to 37Β°6' N
c) 68Β°7' E to 97Β°25' E
d) 8Β°4' S to 37Β°6' N
Answer: a [2, 8]
Moderate:
2. The Tropic of Cancer passes through how many states in India?
a) 6
b) 7
c) 8
d) 9
Answer: c (Gujarat, Rajasthan, MP, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, WB, Tripura, Mizoram) [11, 13]
Difficult:
3. Consider the following statements:
1. The distance between East and West extremities of India is 3214 km.
2. Indian Standard Time is 5:30 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
Which of the above is/are correct?
a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2
Answer: b (Statement 1 is incorrect because the East-West distance is 2933 km, while North-South is 3214 km) [8, 16].
Quick Revision Notes
- Hemisphere: Northern and Eastern [2, 4].
- Area & Rank: 3.28 million sq. km (2.4% of world), 7th Largest [5-7].
- Tropic of Cancer (23.5Β° N): 8 States [11].
- Standard Meridian (82.5Β° E): GMT +5:30 [16].
- N-S & E-W Distance: 3,214 km & 2,933 km (Due to converging longitudes at poles) [6, 8].

Exam Tips π‘
Whenever you see a question about India's location, visualize the grid. Pay close attention to keywords like "Mainland" versus "Indian Union" and "Latitudinal" versus "Longitudinal". TGPSC examiners love to swap these terms to test your presence of mind.
Memory Trick π¦
States of Tropic of Cancer (West to East): GU RA MA CH JHA WE TRI MI
(Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Mizoram) [11, 13].
